Brick and Mortar, Blood and Bone.
‘Brick and Mortar, Blood and Bone’ is an ongoing series of illustrations exploring the variety of architecture present in each neighbourhood in the city of Hamilton Ontario, Canada
The long-term intention of this project is to find a connection to community and the history of this city through its architecture.
The line-work of each illustration is drawn by hand, scanned and rendered digitally. Each piece takes approximately 4 months to complete. Buildings are chosen based on aesthetic, their contents and their influence/prominance within the city.
What value do these buildings hold within the city of Hamilton, and why? Where do communities congregate, and what can they find within those buildings? How does it influence the way we travel around the city?
What institutions/ businesses/ programs/ establishments are present within specific buildings, and why? How does that influence the way we view and interact with each other?
K.I.S.S.
Each piece created in this series emphasizes the exploration of simplicity.
Limited colour pallets, simple composition, and minimal rendering helped to keep attention and enthusiasm during the creative process.
Drawn out by hand, scanned and rendered digitally, this series explores the juxtaposition of macabre subject matter with bright, simple and graphic aesthetics, inspired by traditional wood block printing processes.
How do we relate to the more more macabre aspects of life when it is removed from its literal representation to something more abstract?
Is it less upsetting? Is it easier to face when presented through a bright and graphic aesthetic? Or does it not do enough to deter caution and concern?
